[文摘]:The impact of environmental issues has encouraged developments in STOL technology. Highly innovative configurations are being considered. Also, many older concepts can be revisited, bearing in mind recent advances in materials, control, and propulsion technology. One such concept is the "Channel" wing first pioneered by the Custer Wing Corp. in the 1950s. The concept was also tested in NACA wind tunnel facilities. The STOL capability was obvious, but control and low speed handling difficulties were also evident. This paper focuses on the core problem, i.e., zero and low forward speed on channel (arc) wings, compared with planar wings. It is shown that the Channel wing does offer additional lift, which is a function of the fan velocity. Various geometry effects assessed include LE sweep, arc angle, and single and twin fans. Ground effects are studied. Avenues for future work include flow separation prediction for the channel and wing regions to include air foil geometry, Mach number, incidence, side-slip, and fan velocity effects. This will lead to the development and use of design methods for wings and air foils in the presence of fans and will result eventually, in more optimum configurations.
