[文摘]:Results are presented of photopolarimetric observations of Comet Austin with the IAU/IHW filter system obtained on the 2.34-m Vainu Bappu Telescope at Kavalur, India, during preperihelion phase on February 20, 1990 and on the 1.2-m telescope at Gurusikhar, Mount Abu, during postperihelion phase on May 2 and 4, 1990. The flux distribution of the comet as observed through three IAU/IHW continuum filters is bluer on May 2 and 4 compared with the solar flux distribution. Wavelength dependence of polarization in the comet on May 2 and 4 shows that the polarization decreases sharply with decreasing wavelength. Polarization vectors in continuum and emission bands are perpendicular to the scattering plane. The steep wavelength dependence of the degree of polarization and the bluer flux distribution compared to a solar analog indicate that the dust size distribution lies in a narrow range and the sizes of the dominant particle are expected in the range of 0.1 to 0.5 micron.
