[文摘]:The SPECTRO experiment energetic ion composition spectrometers on AUREOL-3 satellite measured ion features in the ranges 0.01 to 14 keV/Q and 1 to 32 amu. At high latitude the spectrometers analyzed upflowing and downflowing nearly transverse ion streams. Inside the auroral oval, transversely accelerated ions (TAI) associated with electron precipitation are relatively frequent. Above the polar cap, TAI are observed at AUREOL-3 altitudes. The ions are mainly O(+), observed in all MLT sectors and in the 400 to 2000 km altitude range of the satellite, showing that the acceleration mechanisms are efficient at very low altitude and can operate on a broad scale. In the auroral region TAI are interpreted as the result of a strong heating by electrostatic ion cyclotron waves. Ionospheric ions accelerated above the polar cap with an energy between 10 and 200 eV are not consistent with predictions and observations of polar wind composition. All the ions constitute an important source of energetic magnetospheric plasma. (ESA)
